About
The Torbay Garden Club was established in 1953 as the Torbay Garden Circle under the auspices of the NZ National Party to cater for the many keen gardeners in the area. It was not until 1966 that the Circle seceded from the National Party. In 1979 it was renamed the Torbay Garden Club, as it had outgrown the title of Circle.
It began with 12 members and later grew to close on 150. The current membership (2020) stands around 88. Meetings were held in various local halls until the Torbay Community Hall was opened in 1973. This is where the Garden Club has met ever since.
Dame Thea Muldoon was the club's Patroness for many years and in 1958 Mr Muldoon, a specialist lily grower, gave a talk to members. Over the years members have heard many interesting talks and demonstrations by specialist people covering all aspects of gardening. There has been a trading table operating since the beginning with many a bargain plant, jam or book on offer. Sales from the trading table and the raffles each club day help pay for the use of the hall as no entrance fee is charged.
The Spring Show in September is a highlight of the year. The competition covers spring bulbs, all types of flowers, foliage, fruit and vegetables and also floral art. The Rose Show in November is also very popular with a wonderful display of roses which fill the hall with their perfume. Cups and trophies are presented at the end of the year to those who have gained most points in the various competitions.
Each year a number of coach trips are organised for our keen gardeners to enjoy other gardens, both in Auckland and further afield.
